MANTAS

Medium: 50-60 Andean mantas from various regions, safety pins, inflatables.

Mantas transport babies, sustenance, flowers, crops, and traditions. In the Peruvian Andes, they are used for labor and to the artist, they represent the connection between mother and child. The mantas in this work belong to my grandmother, aunt, mother, self and others I consider family. They are held together with safety pins allowing them to shift and grow, like the women they represent and the communities that they hold together.

In the video work, I take you inside of the mantas, offering a view into my identity and the intimate connection I share with my mother. The video also speaks to migration, immigration, and the toll that time and distance take on the connections to our heritage. The audio is taken from visits to my home in Lima, Peru and from my home in Miami.
